Musing on Music - ONOMA

Image
When you think of Israel, you don't think of alternative heavy metal. ONOMA is out to change all that. ONOMA  just released their first single and video entitled Bug . It's quite amazing. It has a Tool -ish Alice in Chains -ish feel to it. It's stark and gritty and full of massive riffage thanks to Asaf Keidan on guitar. The bass sound on BUG is thumpin. In parts of the song, the bass is forefront.  I love it! Andrei Aframov is a powerhouse. The vocals are sweetly wicked. Elad Koren has a sultry edge to his voice and then he lets it all out when he switches to the screamo type vocals. It makes you go O_o  He's just that good! Saggi Chen 's drumming hard and driving. If Bug is any indication of how the debut album sounds, "All Things Change" was a dark horse of 2012! To bad I didn't know about them sooner, or they'd be on the Top 10 Albums of 2012.  Sylvia Masy and James Murphy created some wicked alchemy with ONOMA's debut album. All T

Top 10 Photographs of 2012

Image
Everyone tends to list the Top 10 Albums or Top 10 Videos of the year. I've done both in recent posts for the Kali Diaries. Now I'd like to present something new. The Top 10 Photographs of 2012. My shooting year was cut short due to relocation to South Korea. I only had 6 months to get out there and shoot something. It was still a chore to find 10 of the best photographs I've taken this year. I discounted the Comicons and other events and kept it strictly metal! One of the "problems" shooting metal shows is trying to steady a Canon and head bang. LOL  All the bands I've shot this year have given 110% on stage. They are awesome live and it's been a privilege to shoot them. So here are my, Victoria Anderson, Top 10 Photographs of 2012! Enjoy!!! #10 Metallica at Orion Festival June 2012 #09 Baroness in Philadelphia #08 Goatwhore in Brooklyn, NY #07 Anthrax in NYC   #06 Death Angel in NYC, opening for Anthrax!  #05 Diamond

Munruthel - CREEDamage (Svarga Music)

Image
Munruthel - CREEDamage (Svarga Music) Ok - this had me in the opening strains of the introductory song. Munruthel 's CREEDamage is operatic and big. It's like a blockbuster Conan film or something. The orchestration is just immense and overpowering. If you didn't know any better you would think it's from one of the planet's top classically trained orchestras. Indeed, just the song titles are awe inspiring. Ardent Dance of War's God, Rolls of Thunder From Fiery Skies, Krada P.1 The Blood, P.2 The Surya , and P.3 The Fire. Amazing. The vocals are the Mojo Dojo growly style vocals that invoke Viking lore and evil hordes. But don't get used to them. They are deliciously balanced by sweeping and ethereal vocal harmonies; most of which are in a foreign language. The female vocals are handled by Alina Gornostayeva . This further enhances the operatic nature of the album. The compositions are enough to make Wagner dizzy! Rolls of Thunder From Firey Skies is

Chicago thrashers DIAMOND PLATE have confirmed the addition of MATT ARES to the band as their new vocalist and bassist, following the departure of former frontman JON MACAK. The band have started working on the follow-up to their 2011 debut album, GENERATION WHY?, with the new album due to be released in 2013. DIAMOND PLATE have issued the following statement: (Left to right: Konrad Kupiec, Mario Cianci, Matt Ares, Jim Nicademus) "Over the past few months we have been writing and demoing songs for the next album. During that time, we felt that the chemistry between Jon and the rest of the band wasn't as strong as it needed to be. We decided to move on, and find someone that shared the same passion to create the music that we've always wanted to make. We wish Jon all the best, and we want to thank him for being a part of this band. "We are extremely excited to announce and welcome Matt Ares into the band as vocalist and bassist. Matt has really been a breath of

Browning Part Ways With Rhythm Section

Image
It is with much sadness and a heavy heart that I must report that the Browning are losing two of the finest musicians I've ever had the pleasure of shooting (with my Canon) and hanging with. The rhythm section comprised of Noah Robertson on drums and Jesse Glidewell on bass are departing the Browning says lead singer Jonny McBee. Hey everyone! Just wanted to update you on somethings! Jesse and Noah have both decided to step down both for their own personal reasons. I want to thank both of them for putting work into this with us! This doesn't effect any of our upcoming touring plans and our NEW ALBUM we are in the process of writing :) Stoked for you guys to hear these new songs when its ready, and stoked to see all of you out at some shows! ... Another big tour update coming next week :) Drew will be going back to bass, and our friend Cody is coming out to play drums! See you all soon! ♥ - Jonny Hat's off to Noah and Jesse! Kali Diaries wishes you long life

All Hail The Yeti: new drummer and tour dates

Kicking off just days ago Los Angeles-based stoner/groove metallers ALL HAIL THE YETI is currently embarked on the recently announced Reconcile For Revenge Tour , the first full trek in support of their self-titled debut full-length, released at the end of August worldwide via AFM Records . The outfit is currently raging across the western half of the country, and has just expanded the tour, adding an additional slew of dates to the brutal trek. ALL HAIL THE YETI has also confirmed the recent addition of a new drummer following the recent departure of Skylar Feigel. Frontman Connor Garritty released an official statement on the new band member this week: “ We are very excited to announce that we have recruited a new drummer. Steve White officially joined the band in early October. His enthusiasm and positivity are a refreshing start to this new chapter of the band. He is an outstanding drummer that brings a whole new element to the table that we never had bef

Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence

Image
Between the Buried and Me released The Parallax II: Future Sequence on October 9, 2012 via Metal Blade Records . To say this is a concept album is a bit of an understatement. The North Carolina based band released a very heady, sometimes confusing, but always interesting album. Parallax sounds like some groovy 70s Yes inspired album. It's full of guitars and keyboards and harmonies. It's a total throwback with a modern feel. Nothing on Parallax feels dated. The songs showcase the guitar work of Paul Waggoner and Dustie Waring in a truly inspired way. What's totally cool about this album is that the guitars are very Yes, very ELP and it has the vocal harmonies of prog rock but it also has the crazy growly vocals that meander in and out of already complex fusion compositions. Parallax is a musical journey. You feel a bit like Alice though the looking glass. You never know where the album is going to take you. You just intuitively know that the path is going to be

Bonded By Blood Cancels End of Tour

Image
Blerg and double Blerg!!! Welcome to 2012: home of broke down vans and shoddy workmanship. It truly doth suck when a band as great as Bonded By Blood gets side lined due to vehicle malfunctions, but that's just what happened this month. Bonded By Blood had to cancel the last few dates with Death Angel and a few So. Cal. shows due to issues with their van... multiple issues. It's a head ache when any working person can't get to work due to car issues. It's worse when you have hundreds upon hundreds of adoring fans counting on you making it to the venue, gearing up, and making their ears bleed. On 10-17-12 our rear axel blew causing us to miss the last 3 dates of Death Angel's Ultra Violence tour. In the beginning of this tour we had to get the radiator replaced twice (due to bad mechanics) and as a result with all the van's damages we can longer afford to get a new van like we had hoped for future tours. We lost a lot of money.. We are now reaching out to o

Katie Calautti talks to Bruce Campbell about Evil Dead Movie

A mondo shout out and huge bevy of thanx to Katie Calautti   and Spin Off Online for this bitchin' interview with legendary Bruce Campbell . Kati caught up with Bruce at the NYC Comicon at the Javits Center and they discuss the brew-haha over the upcoming Evil Dead Movie. Check out Kati Calautti and more at Spin Off Online . Bruce Campbell is a man who requires no introduction, but – in case you’ve been living under a rock (or trapped in the basement of a cursed cabin) for the past 30 years – he’s the chainsaw-wielding star of the Sam Raimi -directed Evil Dead movies. The trilogy is a cult classic, beloved by its vehemently protective fan base, which is why the announcement of a remake (produced by Campbell, Raimi and another original producer, Rob Tapert ) garnered cries of outrage. Shortly before revealing a first look at the Evil Dead remake at New York Comic Con , Campbell sat down with a group of reporters to discuss the film. He didn’t shy from addressing fan s

Jessie Sanchez of Bonded By Blood talks about upcoming headlining tour for The Aftermath

Image
Bonded by Blood are about to start on a brand spanking new tour. They will blitzkrieg across the USA until October. They are supporting the critically acclaimed The Aftermath which was released earlier this summer on Earache Records . I shanghaied “new” bassist Jessie Sanchez and asked him about the upcoming tour, his new endorsement, and life as a musician.  KaliDiaries: Mr. Jessie Sanchez, you are the “new” bass player for one Bonded By Blood from California. How is professional musician life treating you? Mr. Sanchez: It feels great to finally be in a band again that I feel 100% comfortable to be myself in. It’s like being in high school all over again, except I don’t have to wake up at 0730am every day for class. KaliDiaries: From the look at your last tour schedule and this one, I’m thinking you are working harder now than when you were in high school. Promoting a new album must be grueling.  Mr. Sanchez: It’s a fun type of working hard because I’m doi

The Hobbit - Official Trailer

Image
SQUEEEEEEEEE the most amazing thing you will ever see (OK the Dredd stuff) but next to that!!! The next official trailer for the Peter Jackson epic THE HOBBIT!!! It's just amazing. I can't wait until this is released. Peter Jackson hit it out of the ballpark with the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and now he's taken on the first book of the "series"; a precursor if you will. THE HOBBIT tells of Bilbo Baggin's adventure with the dwarves. Filmed again against the stunning backdrop of New Zealand, this film promises to be a visual feast for the eyes that many thanks to Andrew Lesnie (cinematographer and 22 time Oscar winner).  THE HOBBIT brings back Ian McKellen as Gandolf, Cate Blanchett as an Elvin Queen, Hugo Weaving and Elrond, and Elijah Wood as Frodo.  So many familiar faces one is instantly comfortable. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be out this year and next year, 2013, the second installment The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

September Friday Night Dance Party

Image
Another first Friday is upon us. That means another Friday Night Dance Party! Start a fresh new Autumn night right by whoopin' it up in your living room! Plenty of new music to keep the party going! Let's kick it off with one of my personal favourites! Rival Sons - "Keep On Swinging" "Keep On Swinging" is the first single from the band's highly-anticipated new album, HEAD DOWN. RIVAL SONS frontman JAY BUCHANAN comments: "Shooting the video for Keep On Swinging was a pleasure.  Snake handling while wailing to a congregation in an old church is pretty high up there on the list of odd ways to pass the time.  Excuse me while I go to hell."   RIVAL SONS drummer MICHAEL MILEY adds: "We recently returned from an exciting expedition; it was an adventure.  The Spirit was moving in that room.  We were playing in a church somewhere in the South (can't reveal exact location) and had to convince this congregation we could be a musical catalys
